Astrid Rothaug

Astrid Rothaug, born 1996 in Vienna, is an Austrian animator, filmmaker, artist and writer with a focus on interdisciplinary storytelling. Studied Drawing and Printmaking at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (Prof.Jan Svenungsson, diploma 2014) and 3D animation / VFX at PixlVisn Mediaart Academy (2025-ongoing).

Her multi-award-winning commissioned and independent short films have been presented on ORF (AT), ARTE (FR, GE) and festivals include FANTOCHE, Manchester Animation Festival, Filmfest Dresden, DIAGONALE and Filmfestival Max Ophüls Preis. Her film Challenges of a solitary mind is currently in distribution by sixpackfilm (AT), Kurzfilmverleih (DE) and L´Agence du Court Metrage (FR).

All of her works are inspired by her intermediary approach, allowing the different techniques to influence each new project. In filmmaking, she often works in small teams, creating the 2D animations, concept, text and storyboard herself while collaborating with composers regarding music and sound design. Currently working on a script for an animated feature film for children, she is looking forward to working in a larger team.

Astrid Rothaug lives and works in Vienna.
